Yes. Any drone between 250 g and 25 kg flown in Canada requires at least a Basic Category RPAS Pilot Certificate from Transport Canada. Operations in controlled airspace or near people require the Advanced certificate, and lower-risk BVLOS operations require Level 1 Complex certification.
Basic covers operations in uncontrolled airspace away from bystanders. Advanced adds controlled airspace and operations near or over people, and requires a flight review. Level 1 Complex (TP 15530) authorizes lower-risk beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations and requires additional ground school and a dedicated flight review.
Your certificate does not expire, but under CARS 901.65 you must complete a recency activity every 24 months, such as a Transport Canada–compliant recurrent training program like our RPAS Recency Seminar.
Yes. Basic, Advanced, and Level 1 Complex exams are written online through the Transport Canada Drone Management Portal. Our ground school includes TC-style practice questions so you know what to expect before you write.
